3Tera Envisions Utility Computing for Web Apps

3Tera Inc. announced the company’s vision to enable utility computing for Web applications. Comprised of seasoned industry veterans with a history of developing breakthrough technologies, 3Tera leverages Grid architecture to free online applications from the hardware infrastructure required to deliver them. Web-based applications become completely portable, easily scalable and can be managed remotely on grids of commodity servers using only a browser. This makes true utility computing a reality, and opens market opportunities for hosting providers, as well as Web 2.0 and SaaS companies.

Grid technology has been used to scale large number-crunching applications in science and finance, but grids have been unable to run and scale the transactional and I/O intensive applications that dominate the Web. 3Tera has broken the barrier between Grid computing and Web applications by advancing virtualization with the introduction of its Disposable Infrastructure technology, which frees businesses from some of the complexity associated with traditional infrastructure.

“Software as we know it is being replaced by online services, but scaling these services is highly complex and requires enormous amounts of capital,” said Vlad Miloushev, president  and CEO of 3Tera Inc. “It is not accidental that one of the biggest search companies has more patents on load balancing than on search. 3Tera is working with hosting providers to offer reliable self-serve utility computing services that make Web applications easy to deploy, manage and scale. In the next decade, only the largest enterprises will be able to justify owning and operating their own servers.”

“As software moves online, the demands on hosting providers will increase. This is a golden opportunity to establish a strategic position to the delivery of Web 2.0 and SaaS applications,” said Andrew Schroepfer, president of Tier1 Research. “3Tera can equip hosting providers with a highly available, reliable system for managing utility-oriented data center infrastructure so that developers can focus on their applications.”

“As a new Internet marketing and media content delivery services company, we require a way to quickly roll out new services to ensure our competitive edge, and we need our infrastructure to have 100 percent uptime, yet we don’t want to own and operate a data center,” said Gabriel Kent, CTO of Intl News Media. “3Tera’s system is enabling us to remotely manage our infrastructure, conduct self-serve provisioning, and scale our applications on demand as our business grows. With AppLogic, we’ve dramatically streamlined our data center operations and costs, and we pay only for the resources our applications require to run.”

3Tera is working with leading hosting providers worldwide to deliver utility computing services. As part of that effort, the company continues to work with developers to expand the market of virtualized infrastructure readily available for use by Web 2.0 and SaaS companies in their service offerings.
